Philip, Colin Bent
Colin Bent Phillip was born in Kensington in 1855, the son of John “Spanish” Phillip and studied art at the Lambeth School of Art, in Edinburgh, and under David Farquharson.
From 1882 he exhibited at most of the principal London galleries and was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1890 and to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1898. He specialised in Highland subjects. Phillip showed 114 works at the RWS, 205 at the RSW, 15 at the Royal Academy and others elsewhere.
His work 'Landscape with a River' in the collection of Hospitalfield almost certainly shows Ben Nuis and Ben Tarsuinn above Glen Rosa on Arran.
